Using the Tablet PC in Meetings

Well, it has been about 3 weeks now since I have started using the Toshiba M200 Tablet PC, and I am thoroughly impressed. I’ve found so many ways to utilize the tablet in my daily work, but one of the best applications of the tablet for me is the way I can use it in meetings.

By putting the tablet in slate mode, I can write notes just as if I were writing in a notebook (using EverNote or OneNote, for example).. I an be visually engaged with other people, while still making use of a computer when I need to. For example, if someone asks me to send them a file during a meeting, I can send it to them right then, but without the distraction of opening up my laptop.

One of the first meetings I took my tablet to was an informal conversation in someone’s office, with about 5 people. I sat in a chair with my M200 in slate mode in my lap, jotting down some notes from our discussion. I had to pull up a couple of files to reference as part of the meeting, and was able to do that with a few clicks of the pen. There was no stigma or distraction of me sitting with an open laptop in my lap pounding away on the keyboard as we talked. We had a great discussion, and I was able to use my computer when I needed to without the computer getting in the way.

My Tablet PC Experience: Day 1

It’s been just over one week since I began using the Toshiba M200 Tablet PC, and I have some initial observations, evaluations and successes. I will first chronicle the first week with some daily experiences and thoughts as I had them.

Day 1

I transferred all my data from my previous laptop to the Toshiba. I used the Microsoft Settings and Files Transfer wizzard for the first time, and it worked quite well. It essentially creates one large archive file – 2G in my case – that you then copy over to your new PC. It then transfers all your color, font, sound schemes, desktop settings, printer and network shares to your new machine.

I downloaded the Orange Guava desktop after hearing and reading so much about it. I installed the 60 day (yes, very generous) trial version.

I downloaded and installed the Microsoft Tablet PC Experience Pack that they recently released.

I downloaded my other software tools (Copernic Desktop Search, EverNote, etc. – I’ll write more later about the productivity tools that I’ve found and use).

I figured out the basics of how to use the pen and tablet to move the mouse around and click (this is the first time I’ve ever actually used a Tablet PC, though I’ve read quite a bit about them).
